ABOUT DKG WOMEN
Empowering women educators on their path to success!
TRAILBLAZER
Born on August 19, 1870, in Houston, Texas, Annie Webb Blanton was destined to leave an indelible mark on the world of education. The loss of her twin sister, Fannie, at the tender age of twelve, marked a turning point in Annie’s life. Amid personal hardships, she persevered in her studies and completed high school in LaGrange, Texas. With determination and grit, Annie embarked on her teaching journey, starting at a one-room county school in Pine Springs.
Life’s hardships did not deter Annie; instead, they fueled her drive to excel. She moved her family to Austin after her father’s passing and continued her teaching career at elementary schools and eventually at Austin High School. Undeterred by societal norms that sought to limit women’s aspirations, Annie pursued her college education in 1890 at the University of Texas, where she earned her Bachelor of Literature degree in 1899.
Annie’s passion for teaching and dedication to the field did not go unnoticed. In 1901, she began her tenure at North Texas State Normal School in Denton, where she would teach for seventeen years. As her reputation as an exceptional educator grew, so did her influence. In 1916, she achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first woman to be elected president of the Texas State Teachers Association.
Annie’s presidency marked the beginning of her extraordinary advocacy for public education. She established a fund to support campaigns for increased support for schools, and her success in this role garnered support for her bid as State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Supported by the Texas State Women Suffrage Association, she made history once more in 1918 by becoming the first woman elected to a public office in Texas.
In 1929, she founded Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization that brought together like-minded women educators under the guise of courage and determination during a time when such endeavors were prohibited.
Her relentless pursuit of knowledge led her to obtain a Master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a pursuit of a doctorate in rural education and rural sociology at Cornell University. Returning to the University of Texas in 1927, Annie’s exceptional achievements continued, culminating in her promotion to Professor of Rural Education, making her the third woman at the university to attain this rank.
Annie Webb Blanton’s vision extended beyond her own accolades; she saw the potential to create a lasting impact by empowering women educators globally. In 1929, she founded Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization that brought together like-minded women educators under the guise of courage and determination during a time when such endeavors were prohibited. Her passion, organizational skills, and zeal led to the rapid growth and expansion of the organization, with chapters being formed in 35 states by 1941.
Despite health challenges in the later years of her life, Annie’s commitment to Delta Kappa Gamma remained unwavering. Her dedication to the organization persisted, as she continued to inspire and empower educators. In the shadow of towering live oaks at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Annie Webb Blanton rests, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, empowerment, and transformation.
Her remarkable journey and pioneering spirit continue to inspire generations of women educators within Delta Kappa Gamma, who proudly carry forward her legacy. Annie Webb Blanton’s unwavering commitment to education and advocacy for women’s rights serves as a guiding light, reminding us all that no challenge is too great to overcome when fueled by passion, bravery, and a desire to make a difference.
